Trust

Update as of 10-15-2018 -- The case has been dismissed by both parties.  As we have agreed to move forward, the dismissed case will remain confidential.

----

Trust is something we all consider valuable.  Trust is fundamental in the creation and building of any type of relationship. I found countless quotes about "trust." Some had an author, such as the following:

"Love all, trust a few."
--- William Shakespeare

"The best way to find out of you can trust somebody is to trust them."
---- Ernest Hemingway

"Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters
cannot be trusted with important matters."
--- Albert Einstein

"The trust of the innocent is the liar's most useful tool."
--- Stephen King

What is Trust?

Google gives a very concise and clear definition --
Firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.

Although it sounds simple, it is the most powerful element needed to build and sustain any type of relationship. When I think about my past relationships, both professional and personal, it becomes more evident that without trust, a relationship CANNOT survive.

Trust Issues

A strong friendship and business relationship I have with someone was put to the test recently. After this test, our relationship suffered but eventually survived after we had an honest and open conversation. The main issue in the relationship was "trust."

During this period of time, the lack of effective communication between us created conflict. This friend grew so untrusting to the point that he became paranoid about my intentions. In the past, we had shared with each other some stories about other people whom we had a hard time trusting. I would always tell him to ask questions when in doubt instead of making assumptions and creating stories. I told him that not making assumptions had saved many of my relationships.

We met at a restaurant last week. The first thing he said as he sat down at the table was, "are you recording this conversation?" He made me show my cell phone and then demanded I put it away. I was thinking "wow, he has become really paranoid."

What was shocking is how familiar this situation seemed to me... just as when Victor Alfieri became paranoid and started to create bizarre stories about me and others involved in the production of our film.

So it is not surprising that Victor Alfieri was brought up into our conversation. "I would love to hear his side of the story," he said. I told him to simply visit this blog and read the story if he wished. He responded that he had done so and had googled me. "And it doesn't make you look good," he added. I quickly said "I don't care what your opinion is. I did what felt right for me. I told the TRUTH."

I will not deny I got very upset with that comment. I will also admit that it was not true that I did not care about his opinion. Of course I cared. We all care about what our friends or colleagues think of us. It is based on those opinions that we act upon, that we treat others and that we build solid relationships. What I really meant to say was, "I have no control over your opinion. I did what felt right for me. I told the TRUTH. And it really hurts to hear you have such a low image of me.... and that you do not trust me."

I am aware that his statements and accusations are a reflection of himself and his own fears - and they have NOTHING to do with me.  We can only see the negative traits in others that exist in our own reality - either something we have and want to hide or something we have witnessed or have endured as a "victim." I wonder to what type of betrayal he has been subjected, what experiences have scarred him in such a way that he has a hard time trusting anyone.

Fortunately we were eventually able to work out all the differences and misunderstandings.  He has opted to trust again... And so have I. After this incident our friendship has gotten stronger. We have made the pact to always communicate openly with the each other.

Should We Trust Others?

Yes!!! We should.  Even if they betray us??  Yes! I am not saying that if someone is a compulsive liar and has proven unreliable again and again, we should "trust" them with important and vital decisions we make in life. That is why we have common sense, right? But we can extend our trust to them from one human to another, by encouraging them to believe in themselves - believe that they can do better and can keep their word.  We reflect TRUST on one another.  If we trust, we are more likely to be trusted. If we distrust, we will probably get the same in return.

You may be deceived if you trust too much,
but you will live in torment if you don't trust enough."
 --- Frank Crane

"Our distrust is very expensive."
--- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"It is an equal failing to trust everybody, and to trust nobody."
--- English Proverb

"It is impossible to go through life without trust;
that is to be imprisoned in the worst cell of all, oneself."
--- Graham Greene

As Cardinal De Retz states, "a man who doesn't trust himself can never really trust anyone else." In other words, it all starts with ourselves. How can I trust anyone else when I cannot trust the person closest to me -- my SELF?

"As soon as you trust yourself,
you will know how to live."
---Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Respect cannot survive without trust. Love cannot be expressed in the absence of trust. Trust, as Stephen Covey puts it, "is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle of all relationships," including the relationship we have with ourselves.

Many say that trust is earned just as respect. I disagree. I believe that trust is a choice. It is a choice that starts with self-trust. Let's have trust in ourselves, in our intuition, in knowing that we always have the answer we are seeking and can make the right decisions in life if we listen to our soul. Let's pay it forward and extend this gift of TRUST to everyone around us. Let's create a wave of trust through forgiveness, compassion and kindness towards others.

Being Brave

Update as of 10-15-2018 -- The case has been dismissed by both parties.  As we have agreed to move forward, the dismissed case will remain confidential.

----

Last night a male friend of mine said to me that having all these details of my relationship with Victor over the internet was a big "turn off." His advice to me was not to talk about it. "And these lawsuits..." he started saying, "I did not start any of this" I interrupted. And not to talk about it??? It was not a choice for me anymore. My reputation and business were greatly damaged because of this. I had to clear my name somehow.

This friend then said, "you must have done something to make him do what he did to you." I don't believe I am responsible for Victor's actions. However, I would have to agree with my friend to some degree. This "Trevino-Alfieri Story" would have not happened if I had not stayed in a relationship with Victor - a relationship as a lover, friend or business partner. I chose to stay. I chose to trust him. I chose to invest in his film. I chose not to speak up when I disagreed. I always had a choice... And I certainly made a choice every time.

I finally feel that I am starting to recover from this whole experience. I believe I have come a long way. But, why am I so hurt by my friend's words?... So what am I supposed to do now? Should I take down this blog? Should I stop writing my book? Should I go curl up in a corner and swallow my truth? Should I shove this whole experience (the good and the bad) into a dark closet where "shameful" stories are to be hidden?

No! I have chosen to be brave and speak up. As to being courageous and honest, my friend Jane told me of a very popular song that addresses these two qualities. The song is "Brave" by Sara Bareilles. "Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do when they settle beneath your skin, kept on the inside and no sunlight. Sometimes the shadow wins. But I wonder what would happen if you say what you wanna say and let the words fall out. Honestly, I wanna see you be brave."

The lyrics to this great song speak to me loudly, just as I imagine they do to many other people. "Don't run, stop holding your tongue. Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live. Maybe one of these days you can let the light in. Show me how big your brave is."

And the song goes on to say, "And since your history of silence won't do you any good. Did you think it would? Let your words be anything but empty. Why don't you tell them the truth?"

So I told my truth!!! And I continue sharing it with anyone who cares to read my words. Some will understand me a little better and will feel empathy. Some will be critical and will judge me. Others will get triggered or annoyed with my story and its details. Some might even take it personally... And maybe some will feel deeply touched and inspired to stop hiding and speak up their own truth.

---------------------

Thank you, Sara Bareilles for your wonderful uplifting and inspiring song.
I will keep it as part of my blog to remind us that we can all be brave and live in our truth!!!

"BRAVE"

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love
Or you can start speaking up

Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes the shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody's been there, everybody's been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
Don't run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won't do you any good
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don't you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I want to see you be brave

I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I want to see you be brave

I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I want see you be brave

I just want to see you
I just want to see you
I just want to see you.

There are two songs that remind me how important it is to speak up and tell my truth. "Brave," by Sara Bareilles is one, the other is Katy Perry's "Roar."  I found this interesting video on YouTube.

I did have this very choice to make when I wrote this post - ""Roar" Vs. "Brave."
I chose "Brave."

Perception, Opinion and Judgement

Perception

Update as of 10-15-2018 -- The case has been dismissed by both parties.  As we have agreed to move forward, the dismissed case will remain confidential.

--------------

People perceive events and situations through the filter of their own reality. We could then say that there are billions of different realities out there. That would be accurate.

Even though we all have our individual views, we look for others to validate them thereby making them stronger and more "real." We also give in or agree with others' interpretation of reality to feel that we belong, again, strengthening that "collective" perception.

And then the media comes and disseminates information that already contains opinion and judgment. It is just as if a situation or event were wrapped up in a little gift box and later offered to EVERYONE as the TRUTH.

This is what I experienced when faced with this scandal - Thousands of people reading and writing about this incident voicing their opinion and judgement.

For more on this subject, go to post "Sexual Addiction".

Opinion

Some people had no problem sharing their opinion. Some of the comments on the TMZ article.

"Wow, some chicks are so crazy"
"If this story is true, this woman is crazy."
"Ahahahahahah Don't EVER mess with a horny woman. What, he couldn't throw her a bone... or live organ?
"He should have just banged her. Must be gay. Or the girl is fat. Nobody wants to bang a fat girl. He's probably just gay though. Looks it."
"He knew what she wanted when he took the money...come on now."
"She musta been one FUGLY chick if he couldn't have thrown her a BoNe :-)"
"Sounds like one of Gloria Alldred's clients. Crazy Wackjob bitches. Truth!!!!"
"The least he could have done is sent her a picture of his thing. I mean, come on. I would sell a picture of my **** to someone for 150,000 dollars anytime. In fact, where is this woman? I think her and I could do business.."
"Hey Adriana, Call me!"
"Well, now that ha***** the news, Miss Adriana Trevino will be sent more schlong pictures than she'll now what to do with. I saw her LinkedIn page, she is an attractive red head, with an MBA. So I encourage every guy out there to send her what she whats, email, postal mail, etc. I'm sure if she likes what she sees she'll certainly have a "part" for you! http://www.linkedin.com/pub/adriana-trevino/6/b54/304"

I did get numerous friend requests on facebook and LinkedIn just after TMZ published this. I felt harassed. I called TMZ to tell them that they needed to take my name out. They refused but offered to print my side of the story.

It is true that we all have the right to our own opinion. Nobody can deny that. It is when it creates such negative judgement impacting someone's social and personal life that it becomes an issue.

Judgement

Many of my friends, business associates and acquaintances  heard the news on their own. Others heard it from me.  Most of the comments I heard took me to a very sad and lonely place.

What? How did you let this happen!?
I knew it... I told you so!
Why would you give anyone money just like that??!! That is irresponsible!
I would have never allowed anything like that to happen to me.
He used you.
You should have not trusted him.
You should have never been generous to him.
You should have not given him your love or money so easily.

What has this experience taught me????

Not to trust, not to give and not to love?????

NO. This is not the lesson I want to learn.
